| The
Solar Power Plant of Tauá is the first photovoltaic power
plant in Brazil. The foto was taken in march 2011 as the 4.680
modules (Kyocera) were already installed. The solar park can be
amplified to 5MWp. The power plant is an investment of MPX, partly
financed through the BID (Banco Interamericano de Desenvolvimento). There is a need for more political attempts to get large scale power plants connected to the grid in Brazil in order to achive improvements in brazilians renewable energy mix. There are still obstacles such as import taxes for modules and inverters. Also domestic financing is risky as interest rates are high. On the other hand consumer electricity prices in the north-east of Brazil are high (up to 230 EUR/MWh) and the irradiation in Brazil is 60% to 90% higher than in Germany (where at a price of 210 EUR/MWh the PV capacity is expected to grow 3.000-6.000 MWp in 2011). This project was initiated by MPX. Hopefully it convinces the finance sector of the reliability of solar power and shows politicians that solar energy helps to replace fuel based power plants in 5 to 10 years. Solar energy is the best combination with brazils existing hydro power plants. Further Information on the Tauá Project |
